Custom Jewelry
We’d love to hear from you and we’re always happy to talk about jewelry and answer questions. Prior to contacting us we invite you to explore our design aesthetic and process. Once you’re ready please fill out the contact form below and someone from our team will get back to you within 2-3 business days.
We’ll evaluate if your project aligns with our capabilities and expertise, then schedule a complimentary half hour design consultation.
During this initial consult we will discuss your requests, important details, answer questions and give you a general cost estimate.
By the end of the conversation we’ll both have enough information to determine if the project is feasible. If we decide to proceed, you’ll receive a email for a deposit within 1-3 days.
We encourage you to take your time with the process. Sometimes working with family heirlooms or a major life milestone can bring up a lot of emotions you weren’t expecting. Be gentle with yourself and get curious about what arises, it can be the greatest hidden gift in the process. Jewelry has that magic to carry incredible significance.
Our initial half hour design consultation is complimentary. This is a no-pressure discovery session.
If you’d like to proceed we’ll email a link to your own private page on our website with your project details and deposit payment information.
What happens after I pay my deposit?
Your project is scheduled into our production calendar, materials are sourced, sketches are drawn up if necessary and your exact estimate is worked up based on the market metal prices that day.
Custom Jewelry Deposit
If you’re modifying a current HWJ design we will require a 50% deposit of the estimated total.
If you’re creating a completely new piece of jewelry we will require a $300 design fee which will go towards your total. Once the final design is agreed upon a 50% deposit will be due based on the estimated total discussed during your consult.
Your balance will be due when your jewelry is picked up or before it is shipped. Some smaller projects will require full payment before work begins.
Do you offer payment plans?
We don’t directly handle payment plans, but offer ShopPay installment plans as a payment option.
If we're sourcing gemstones for you, we may ask for a $1,000 deposit. For larger stones, we may request the full price upfront.
Estimates for larger more complex projects will be given a price range. Smaller projects will be the exact cost.
Please note all deposits are non-refundable.
Once your project has been scheduled in, we’ll continue our conversation with some detailed design questions as your jewelry comes to life.
More straightforward projects will move through the custom design process by email. Others will require an in-person consultation or video call. Some pieces may require multiple sizing appointment, which can also be done by mail.
You will be communicating directly with Harmony throughout the design process. Each custom project takes an enormous amount of attention to detail. Occasionally more complex pieces will take more time to make sure each element will work well together. Unique combinations of metal, softness or age of stones and how it will be worn are all elements that will be carefully considered.
We want your jewelry to be breathtakingly beautiful, but also comfortable and long lasting. This takes a lot of behind the scenes work and brainpower. So don’t worry if you don’t hear from us, we’re busily working away on your jewelry!
Feel free to reach out anytime for updates, we love to share process photos and videos.
Will Harmony be making my jewelry?
Depending on the nature of the project either Harmony or Harmony and Kris will be working on your piece. Harmony oversees the design and fabrication of each individual project.
Can you recreate jewelry I have a photo of?
Harmony only creates work within her design aesthetic. Out of respect for other jewelers we cannot duplicate other designs. That being said, it’s very helpful to see your inspiration and design aesthetic so sharing photos is helpful.
Will you send a sketch?
Occasionally if a design needs clarification or is more complex Harmony will send a sketch. Bear in mind it is not an exact representation of what your piece will look like, it’s just a visual aid.
Can I make changes along the way? Yes. We want you to love your new jewelry so it’s better to ask questions and take things slow before the piece is started. Though please note any changes to the design after the 50% deposit commitment is made may incur an additional fee.
How long will it take?
Bespoke projects take approximately 2-4 weeks.
The studio is generally booked out 2-3 months for custom and heirloom re-design projects.
Factors that can extend the timeline.
- Stone sourcing. Finding the perfect gemstone is an art in itself and some requests may take extra time.
- Studio workload. During different times of the year (summer + holiday season) our studio is busy either helping our retail clients or making product to fill the shelves. Also life, waves, family, weather, and pets may delay custom projects. We very rarely get off schedule and you’ll be notified if that occurs.
- Material shortages. Occasionally a gemstone, metal or part won’t be available and will slow down the process.
What if I need my jewelry asap?
If you need your jewelry by a certain date please let us know and we can usually make that happen.
Occasionally a rush fee of $100 will apply due to shipping and scheduling adjustments.
Repurposing heirloom metal and stones is at the heart of creating a custom piece of jewelry. The sentimentality and intention that goes into pieces like these are why we do what we do here.
Can you use my metal?
Yes, our studio is equipped to repurpose your heirloom gold.
I want to use my gold because it’s sentimental.
Your gold will go through a refining process that involves deep cleaning, removing impurities, unsetting stones. Once it is prepared, it’s melted into an ingot and forged into stock for your custom piece of jewelry.
This is a very labor intensive process and will incur a studio fee starting at $500. Occasionally an element of your jewelry can be used without melting it down such as a ring shank. Some designs are not feasible for using client provided gold. All projects will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
We can use clean 14k, 18k or 22k yellow gold and certain platinum alloys. We cannot use chain, gold with solder, plated gold, white gold, certain platinum alloys or sterling silver.
I have precious metal that’s not sentimental.
If we cannot use your metal the value can be credited towards your project at 90% of market value.
Can you use my stones?
Yes, we’d be honored to work with your heirloom stones. Given the delicate nature of working with these very precious gemstones each stone is carefully evaluated and documented before we proceed.
Working with your heirloom stones requires additional care throughout the process. Some of which include considerable design time, highly customized fabrication considerations due to their shape and age, unsetting and re-setting all factor into the scope and cost of a project.
Using heirloom stones incurs a risk during unsetting, since sometimes condition of the stone cannot be determined until it’s unset. We recommend having a gemologist unset and appraise your stones before bringing them in for a custom project.
Larger stones over 1ct must be appraised and insured by the client prior to us working with them.
Harmony Winters Jewelry is not liable for any stone damage during the process.
